Mexico vs. Panama: Schedule, where to watch, and probable lineups for El Tri's friendly match
Javier Aguirre will have his first test of 2026. Mexico will face Panama in a World Cup preparation match
The Mexican national team begins the World Cup year with a friendly match at the Rommel Fernandez Gutierrez Stadium in Panama. Mexico will face Panama in another attempt to break their losing streak since winning the 2025 Gold Cup. Javier Aguirre will have players from Liga MX at his disposal. This will be a match between two teams qualified for the 2026 World Cup. Mexico, as one of the host countries, secured a spot in Group A along with South Africa, South Korea, and the winner of the European playoff; Panama was drawn into Group L with England, Croatia, and Ghana. Panama comes into this match with a record of three wins and two draws in their last five games. The Canaleros are experiencing a very different situation than Mexico. Mexico hasn't won since the Gold Cup final in July 2025 (four draws and two losses). However, the Panamanian team hasn't been able to break down Mexico in recent years. Despite some good performances, Mexico has five consecutive victories against their current opponent. El Tri has only conceded one goal and scored eight. The last time Panama defeated Mexico was on July 24, 2013. With goals from Blas Perez and Roman Torres, the Panamanian team beat Mexico 2-1 in the Gold Cup semifinals. Since then, they haven't defeated El Tri. For this match, Mexico will field a squad full of Liga MX players. Only one player doesn't play in Mexican soccer. Obed Vargas was called up from the Seattle Sounders of MLS. The US tournament has not yet started.
