Monaco GP: Checo Pérez lives another sad Sunday, while Kimi Antonelli makes history with another victory
The Mexican finished tenth on the track, but a penalty relegated him to 15th place. Kimi Antonelli conquered Monaco and increased his lead in F1 2026.
What seemed to be Sergio “Checo” Pérez's first points result with Cadillac ended up becoming a bitter disappointment at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix. The Mexican driver crossed the finish line in tenth position, but a ten-second penalty applied after the race relegated him to 15th place in the final classification.
Meanwhile, the great figure of the weekend was Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who won a historic victory in the streets of Monte Carlo to consolidate himself as the undisputed leader of the Formula 1 championship.
Checo Pérez is left without points after a sanction in Monaco
The driver from Guadalajara had completed one of his best weekends since his arrival at Cadillac, showing a competitive pace that allowed him to cross the finish line within the Top 10, which momentarily meant the historic first point for his team.
However, the stewards determined that Checo Pérez advanced his position on the grid during the last restart of the race, which is why he received a ten-second penalty that completely changed his result.
The penalty caused the Mexican to drop to fifteenth position, losing a valuable opportunity to score his first points of the season.
Furthermore, during the competition he had also received a 'drive through' for an error at the start, after occupying the space left free by Gabriel Bortoleto after starting from the pit lane.
Fernando Alonso takes advantage of the sanction and adds to Aston Martin
The great beneficiary of the penalty to Checo Pérez was Fernando Alonso, who inherited tenth position and got the first point of the season for Aston Martin.
The Spaniard made a remarkable comeback after starting from the penultimate row of the grid and managed to rescue a positive result for a team that has had serious difficulties during the championship.
“It has been a great reward for everyone in the team to have added the first point of the year,” commented Alonso before leaving the circuit where he achieved two of his 32 victories in the premier category, in 2006 - the year he retained the title - and the following season.
Kimi Antonelli conquers Monaco and continues breaking records
If there was an absolute protagonist in the Monaco Grand Prix, it was Kimi Antonelli. The Italian Mercedes driver achieved his fifth consecutive victory and the fifth in the first six races of the 2026 season.
At just 19 years old, Antonelli became the youngest winner in the history of the Monte Carlo circuit and the first Italian to triumph in Monaco since Jarno Trulli in 2004.
The young championship leader dominated a race marked by multiple incidents, safety cars, a red flag and a chaotic final restart.
Hamilton and Hadjar complete the podium in Monte Carlo
Behind Antonelli finished Lewis Hamilton, who achieved his best result since his arrival at Ferrari by finishing in second position.
Third place went to Isack Hadjar, Red Bull driver, who resisted pressure for much of the race to achieve a new podium in his promising career within the top category.
The victory allowed Antonelli to further extend his lead in the world championship.
This is how the championship looks after the 2026 Monaco GP
Thanks to his victory in Monte Carlo, Kimi Antonelli reached 156 points and reinforced his lead in the general classification of Formula 1 2026.
The Italian will travel to the next Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix with a lead of 66 units over Lewis Hamilton, his closest pursuer, fueling expectations of becoming the youngest champion in the history of the category.
While Antonelli continues writing a dream season, Checo Pérez will have to quickly turn the page and seek revenge in Spain after losing an opportunity that seemed destined to give him his first points of the year with Cadillac.
