The Portuguese town of Gondomar, on the outskirts of Porto, was the scene this Saturday of an emotional and massive funeral in honor of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, who died in a tragic traffic accident in Zamora, Spain.

The shock caused by the death of the two footballers brought together figures from Portuguese and international football, who came to pay their last respects.

Stars from Portugal and Liverpool accompanied the family.

Top-level representatives of world football attended the Mother Church of Gondomar. Among them were Portugal coach Roberto Martinez, who traveled from the United States, where he is following the Club World Cup, and the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Pedro Proença.

Diogo Jota's national team teammates, such as Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Dias and Rui Patricio, also attended, as well as Ruben Neves, who traveled from the US after Al Hilal's elimination from the tournament.

Liverpool paid tribute with floral shirts and an emotional presence

Liverpool FC, the club to which Diogo Jota had belonged since 2020, arrived with two shirts made of flowers, with the numbers 20 and 30, in honor of Diogo and André, respectively.

Defender Virgil van Dijk wore the number 20 shirt, while Jordan Henderson wore the number for Andre, who played for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division.

Also in attendance were Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Nelson Semedo, former international Ricardo Carvalho, agent Jorge Mendes and Andre Villas-Boas, president of FC Porto, the club where Diogo Jota played between 2016 and 2018.

The bishop addressed the children of Diogo Jota

The funeral was officiated by the Bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, who addressed a moving message to Diogo Jota's three youngest children Dinis, Mafalda and Duarte, fruits of his relationship with Rute Cardoso, whom he had recently married on June 22.

“Seeing the remains of a child must be a greater torment, and even more so when there are two sarcophagi,” said the bishop, visibly moved, before the family, neighbors, and players who filled the venue.

Although the ceremony was private, loudspeakers were placed outside the church so that hundreds of neighbors could join the family in their grief. Gondomar, the hometown of both brothers, was completely involved in the tribute.
