Cases of Legionnaires' disease in New York reach more than 100, with 4 deaths
The New York Department of Health confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in 12 cooling towers associated with 10 buildings
Health authorities have reported an increase to 101 confirmed cases of legionellosis, including four deaths, in central Harlem. The bacteria, linked to cooling towers, poses a serious public health concern.
The New York Department of Health confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in 12 cooling towers associated with 10 buildings, including NYC Health Hospitals/Harlem. To date, 11 towers have been repaired, with the last expected to be completed shortly. The importance of this control lies in the fact that the plumbing systems are independent, guaranteeing that drinking water is not contaminated.
Health officials stressed that the population can continue to use drinking water and other basic services without the risk associated with legionella. The importance of seeking immediate medical attention for flu symptoms is reinforced.
"This community outbreak is not related to the buildings' hot or cold water supply. Residents in these ZIP codes can continue to drink water, bathe, shower, cook, and use air conditioning," Acting Health Commissioner Michelle Morse said in a statement.
Decrease in cases
According to Dr. Morse, a decrease in new cases has begun to be observed, indicating that corrective actions have been effective. Residents experiencing flu-like symptoms should contact a healthcare provider to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
Legionnaires' disease, which can be fatal if left untreated, has symptoms such as cough, fever and difficulty breathing. Predispositions such as age and weak immune systems increase the likelihood of severe complications.
Monitoring and control of cooling towers
The cooling tower review process is based on a documented prevention and control plan, with periodic inspections, measurement of key water parameters, scheduled cleaning and disinfection, and complete records of all actions to be able to correct deviations in time.
