A minor traffic accident ended up marking the migratory course of a young man who had entered the United States legally. Leopoldo Alvizu, an immigrant with a pending asylum application, was deported after spending nearly six months in immigration custody in Georgia, without his case making substantial progress. The story has raised questions about the prolonged detention of asylum seekers and the difficulties faced by those trapped in the immigration system without legal representation or clear information about their status. According to Univision, Leopoldo Alvizu was detained in June 2025 after being involved in a minor traffic accident in the state of Georgia. Although the incident did not result in serious charges, immigration agents reviewed his situation and placed him in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to Alvizu himself, he tried to explain that he had entered the United States legally with an Italian passport and that he had an active asylum application as a Venezuelan citizen. Even so, he was transferred to the Stewart Detention Center, where his case remained stalled for months without a concrete resolution. The Immigration Process and Administrative Delays: Univision reported that, a few days after entering the detention center, Alvizu formally requested deportation with the intention of ending his confinement. His request included being sent to Italy, a country of which he is also a citizen, as an alternative to leaving the detention system. However, the process took much longer than expected. According to her testimony, she accumulated dozens of unanswered requests within the internal system and went weeks without contact with the officer assigned to her case. Later, she was informed that an administrative error had occurred and that her file had been reassigned, further delaying her release.

Leopoldo Alvizu is 26 years old and holds dual Venezuelan and Italian citizenship. According to Univision, he entered the United States in 2022 with proper documentation and subsequently began an asylum application as a Venezuelan citizen,a process that was pending at the time of his detention.

During his detention, he remained without legal representation. His mother, a resident of Spain, attempted to raise funds to hire a lawyer, but was unable to cover the costs. This lack of legal assistance, according to those close to him, contributed to the prolongation of his stay in immigration custody.

According to statements gathered by Univision, Alvizu described the Stewart Detention Center as a place marked by violence and deplorable conditions.

He claimed to have witnessed serious physical assaults among inmates, as well as critical medical situations without timely attention. He also recounted that many detainees lacked basic resources, such as food or means to communicate with their families. In that context, I have explained that solidarity among the detainees became a form of daily resistance in the face of the lack of institutional support. The Consular Intervention and the Outcome of the Case: After months without progress, Alvizu's deportation process was unblocked thanks to the intervention of the Italian consulate in the United States. According to Univision, this intervention was key to his eventual departure from the country. The young man was sent to Europe and managed to reunite with his family in Spain, where his mother currently resides.
