King Charles III strips all royal titles from Prince Andrew!
The move marks the end of the Duke of York's involvement with the monarchy. He will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor
In a pivotal moment for the British monarchy, King Charles III has made the decision to formally strip his brother, Prince Andrew, of all royal titles and honors. The measure was announced this Thursday, October 30, by Buckingham Palace. From now on, Andrew, 65, will no longer be known as “Prince” and will lose the style of “His Royal Highness.” Instead, he will simply be known as “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor,” a private citizen with no formal ties to the Crown. The statement issued by Buckingham was unequivocal: "Her Majesty today initiated the formal process to remove the titles and honors of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor." Among the honors affected are some of the most prestigious in the kingdom, such as the Order of the Garter and the Knight Grand Cross of the Victorian Order. Furthermore, he will lose his residence at Royal Lodge in Windsor, as he has been notified of the termination of his lease and will have to find private accommodation.
The Weight of the Epstein Scandal
The monarch's decision comes after years of controversy surrounding Andrew's relationship with financier Jeffrey Epstein, convicted of sex trafficking, and following the posthumous publication of the memoirs of Virginia Giuffre, one of the victims.
Although Andrew repeatedly denied the allegations against him and has never been convicted in a court of law, the shadow of the scandal and his poor judgment—evident in his disastrous 2019 BBC interview—made his position within the royal family untenable.
The Palace made the Crown's position clear, stating: “Their Majesties wish to make it clear that their thoughts and deepest sympathies have been, and will continue to be, with the victims and survivors of any form of abuse.”
According to reports, The measure has the support of the royal family, including Prince William, heir to the throne. This marks the first time in over a century that a member of the royal family has been formally stripped of their titles. The last comparable case was that of Prince Ernst August in 1917,who was stripped of his titles for swearing allegiance to Germany during the First World War. Unlike King Edward VIII, who abdicated and received the title of Duke of Windsor, Andrew will retain no honorary ties.
