Trump called Petro president of “Columbia” and it goes viral
While Trump announced that he would suspend
As Donald Trump traded barbs with his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, on social media on Sunday, accusing him of not doing enough to curb illegal drug production and threatening to cut off payments and grants, or worse, the Republican made what many considered a “mistake” by mentioning the South American country.
Amid the clash, a screenshot of the White House spelling “Colombia” as Columbia went viral. Columbia is an Ivy League university in New York City.
Social media users commented on how the “best people” hired by Donald Trump made such a typo, while others questioned the authenticity of the viral screenshot and Trump fans defended the spelling mistake, saying it wasn’t a spelling contest Trump had to win.
Trump referred to Gustavo Petro as the president of “Columbia” and later corrected it to “Colombia” in the message in which he announced the cut of financial aid to that country for its alleged inaction in the fight against drug trafficking.
“President Gustavo Petro of Columbia is a drug trafficking leader who incentivizes massive drug production, both in large and small fields, all over Columbia,” the former president wrote on his Truth Social network.
“He has become, by far, the biggest business in Columbia, and Petro has not "Does nothing to stop it, despite large-scale U.S. payments and subsidies, which are nothing but a long-term scam. As of today, these payments, or any other form of payment or subsidy, will stop being made to Columbia," he continued.
In that message, published at 8:45 a.m. Washington time (12:45 p.m. GMT), Trump referred to the South American country four times, writing "Columbia" each time.
At 9:58 a.m. (1:58 p.m. GMT), the Republican replaced the post with a new message in which he corrected the error and correctly spelled the name of the country.
Last January,The White House also referred to Colombia as "Columbia" when announcing Trump's decision to impose 25% tariffs on that country following Petro's refusal to accept two deportation flights of undocumented migrants.
