Man dies after shootout with police during custody exchange in North Carolina

A man died Friday after shooting at police officers in Mint Hill, North Carolina, during a child custody exchange, local authorities said. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. in the vicinity of an Edible Arrangements store. According to Mint Hill Police, officers responded to a report and, upon arrival, the man pulled out a gun and began shooting. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed in the exchange. Two officers injured during the shooting. Initially, authorities indicated their condition was critical, but hours later reported that both were stable. Witnesses at nearby businesses reported seeing the officers enter a nearby store and then exit, one of them assisting his partner, with blood visible on his hands and face. Ongoing investigation. Television footage showed crime scene technicians collecting evidence inside and outside the establishment where the incident occurred. In a statement, Edible Arrangements said it had no indication that the shooting was related to its staff and was continuing to try to contact the franchise owner.
