A 21-year-old man was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, after allegedly stealing a vehicle in which a 2-year-old girl was staying while her mother made a delivery for the Instacart platform, authorities reported.
The suspect, identified as Saleem Martin, faces charges of kidnapping, carjacking, simple assault, breaking into an automobile, cruelty to minors and attempting to commit a felony, according to the Atlanta Police Department. So far it has not been reported if he has legal representation.
The mother was making a delivery when the robbery occurred
According to the recording of the 911 call, the child's mother explained that she had left the vehicle running while delivering an Instacart order on Thursday.
During that brief moment, the car was stolen with the girl still in the back seat.
Police reported that the investigation confirmed that the vehicle was still running when it was stolen.
The agents managed to locate the car approximately 15 minutes after the theft thanks to the automatic license plate reader system installed in different parts of the city.
On Friday, the Atlanta Police released the images captured by the officers' body cameras during the operation.
In the video, the officers are seen approaching the vehicle and ordering the suspect to raise his hands and get out of the car. Moments later, Martin was handcuffed without any additional incidents.
The minor was found unharmed
The images also show the girl crying while the agents try to calm her after the rescue.
The authorities confirmed that the minor did not suffer injuries and was returned to her parents shortly after the operation.
The investigation into the case continues, while Martin remains facing multiple charges related to the theft of the vehicle and the kidnapping of the minor.
