Marvel's wall-crawler made history again on the big screen. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” achieved a record number in its first weekend in theaters, reaching an impressive $927 million worldwide.
With this performance, the film is officially established as the best premiere so far this year and also marks the second highest-grossing debut of all time, only behind “Avengers: Endgame.”
The feature film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, marks Tom Holland's fourth solo foray into the role of Peter Parker.
Of the total accumulated collection, $355 million dollars correspond to the domestic market of the United States and Canada, while the remaining $572 million come from the international circuit. The Chinese market was key in this commercial feat, contributing $121 million, followed by a notable response in the United Kingdom ($49 million), Mexico ($38 million) and India ($31 million).
The support of the public and the specialized press has been practically unanimous. The film debuted with 90% positive ratings on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and obtained a coveted “A” rating on CinemaScore, supporting the enormous expectations generated around the production.
“It's a truly phenomenal premiere,” said Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and producer of the film. Feige noted that this debut "reflects the enduring power of Marvel characters and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world; and, as audiences have seen, it lays the groundwork for exciting things to come."
Joined in the cast by Zendaya and Mark Ruffalo, Holland reaffirms his status as one of the most profitable names in the industry. With its initial $927 million, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” not only surpasses the start of its previous installments (“Homecoming”, “Far From Home” and “No Way Home”), but also suddenly surpasses the global collection accumulated by other major releases of the season, consolidating itself as the undisputed king of the current box office.
