Three members of the same family died and a fourth person was taken to a hospital after a shooting that occurred Wednesday morning in Prospect Hill, a small community in Caswell County, North Carolina.
According to authorities, the shots were fired shortly before 8:00 in the morning at a home located on Brooks Road, a rural area located about 45 kilometers from Greensboro.
When officers arrived at the scene they found four adults with gunshot wounds outside the residence.
Three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the fourth was taken to Duke University Hospital for medical care, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) reported.
Authorities believe it was a case of family violence.
Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden said the suspected shooter also died during the incident.
So far, authorities have not released the identity of the deceased or the survivor, whose health status has not been reported either.
The investigators pointed out that everything indicates that this is an isolated incident and ruled out that there is a threat to the residents of the community.
Likewise, they described the case as an episode of domestic violence that involved members of the same family.
The investigation continues
Teams from the State Bureau of Investigation, along with deputies from the Caswell County Sheriff's Office, remained on the scene collecting evidence and conducting interviews to clarify the circumstances of the shooting.
Sheriff Durden also reported that his office is working on officially notifying the victims' families.
For now, authorities have not offered additional information about the motive for the attack or the exact sequence of events, while the investigation continues.
