Woman is accused of drugging and robbing men in Mexico and the US, causing 2 deaths
Aurora Phelps is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from elderly men by emptying their bank accounts and using their credit cards.
A woman who is on trial for murder in Mexico after allegedly scamming older men through dating apps could soon return to the United States to face additional charges.
Aurora Phelps, 44, is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from older men by emptying their bank accounts and using their credit cards to make purchases at luxury stores, including Dior, according to a superseding indictment filed in Nevada and obtained by People magazine.
According to the indictment, all of these men were drugged. Two were later found dead and another has been missing for years.
Phelps is currently on trial in Mexico after being charged with murder in connection with one of those deaths, and once legal proceedings are concluded, she is expected to be extradited to the United States to face additional charges in Nevada.
Phelps is charged in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada with seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of mail fraud, six counts of bank fraud, three counts of identity theft and two counts of kidnapping.
All of these charges stem from events that occurred between November 2021 and December 2022 and involve four men whom Phelps is alleged to have met online.
According to the indictment, Phelps met Victim 1 in July 2021 and had a romantic relationship with the “old man” for several months before meeting him at his home on November 1, 2021.
Once at their home, Phelps is accused of asking them both for lunch and then, according to the indictment, causing his companion to “take a prescription medication without his knowledge or consent, rendering him virtually unconscious for the next five days.”
This person survived, but woke up to discover that his Apple shares, valued at $3.3 million, had been sold and that an attempt had been made to steal the money from his online account, according to the affidavit.
In November 2022, Phelps met another elderly man online. She “forced him to consume medication and other substances that caused him to become lethargic and confused,” the accusation states.
She later allegedly traveled to Mexico with the man and his daughter, where she used the victim's bank card and credit card to make purchases for herself.
Phelps returned to the United States several days later, and his companion was found dead in a hotel room in Mexico City.
She then allegedly spent the next two months “using Victim 2's financial accounts, including money transfers to her and her husband's accounts, ATM withdrawals, and online purchases of items such as retail products, airline tickets, hotel rooms, and a motorcycle.”
On December 11, 2021, Phelps allegedly met with Victim 3 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Guadalajara, Mexico. He has been missing since that night.
She is accused of stealing his BMW, attempting to designate herself as the beneficiary of his retirement account, and transferring funds to open a second bank account in his name, which she allegedly used to make purchases for months after his disappearance.
Guadaladir is also the location where Phelps allegedly met Victim 4 on May 30, 2022. He was found dead on the floor of his bathroom the next day.
After her death, he allegedly made transactions using her financial accounts, according to the indictment.
Phelps also faces felony charges in Arkansas.
She is charged with fraudulent use of a credit card for an alleged incident in 2019 involving one of her close friends, who told police she lost her credit card after being drugged by Phelps.
Additionally, the woman is accused of falsely accusing her ex-husband of abuse in the midst of a custody dispute over their children, and later making threatening phone calls to a law enforcement officer and a social worker from the Arkansas Department of Human Services, posing as her ex.
She will not be tried in any of the Arkansas cases until after the federal proceedings in Nevada.
