“Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off confirmed with Shonda Rhimes as producer
The medical drama is reinvented with a spin-off set in a rural Texas hospital. This is known so far
The universe of “Grey’s Anatomy” expands with a new series produced by original creator Shonda Rhimes, whose premiere is scheduled for the 2026-2027 television season of the ABC network, as confirmed by Deadline.
According to the American portal, the script will be written by Meg Marinis, current showrunner of the program since 2024, and Rhimes herself, who in 2007 won the Golden Globe with “Grey’s Anatomy” in the category of Best Drama Television Series.
For its part, the executive production team includes Ellen Pompeo and Betsy Beers, who will work hand in hand with Shondaland and 20th Television to bring the fourth spin-off of the franchise to ABC screens.
One of the details revealed was that the production will focus on a medical team at a rural hospital in West Texas, giving a look at the complexities faced by the population in areas without health services.
“Being able to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe is an opportunity to introduce new characters and stories that maintain the same heart, emotion and connection that have characterized the series for more than two decades, now set in my home state of Texas,” Meg Marinis told Deadline.
This change of location is the first time that a series of the popular franchise is set outside the west coast of the United States and the chaos of big cities. Let us remember that the previous spin-offs of “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Private Practice” and “Station 19”, were set in Los Angeles and Seattle, respectively.
