Nancy Pelosi's husband faces investigation for alleged hit-and-run in California
Authorities ruled out alcohol in the incident; The case was left in the hands of the prosecutor's office and the state DMV.
Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is being investigated for an alleged hit-and-run that occurred Friday in Napa County, northern California, after authorities say he hit a parked vehicle and left the scene of the incident.
According to the Napa County Sheriff's Office, the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. m. in the 6700 block of Yount Street, in Yountville, a town located about 80 kilometers from San Francisco.
The authorities indicated that the affected car was correctly parked and without occupants when it was hit, suffering considerable damage to the rear.
Witnesses report that the driver left the scene
According to the official report, a witness reported that the driver of the vehicle responsible stopped for a few moments after the crash, but later decided to leave. The car was described as a brown convertible.
Shortly after, agents located a vehicle with those characteristics partially blocking a nearby road. Upon arriving at the scene, they confirmed that the driver was Paul Pelosi, 86, whose car had significant damage to the right front.
According to the sheriff's office, Pelosi told the agents that she knew she had hit “something,” although she claimed to not know what she had hit, so she continued driving until her vehicle was immobilized.
“He admitted to hitting something, but said he didn't know what he hit, so he continued driving,” the Napa County Sheriff's Office said.
The case was turned over to the prosecutor's office
The preliminary investigation ruled out alcohol as a factor in the accident, and due to state misdemeanor laws, Paul Pelosi was not arrested.
The authorities reported that they will submit a request to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to perform a reevaluation of their driving abilities, a common procedure for elderly people.
The case was referred to the Napa County Prosecutor's Office, while CBS News reported that it sought a reaction from Nancy Pelosi's office, although no official position has been issued so far.
It should be remembered that in 2022, Paul Pelosi was the victim of a violent attack during a politically motivated raid on the residence he shares with the former Democratic leader in San Francisco.
