Judge rejects Cher's request to control her son Elijah Blue Allman's assets
The judge in charge of the case determined that there were not sufficient grounds to grant guardianship, according to People magazine
After singer Cher alleged that her son Elijah Blue Allman lacks the capacity to manage his assets, a Los Angeles court rejected the artist's last legal recourse to obtain temporary guardianship of her 49-year-old son.
The "If I Could Turn Back Time" singer had filed a request earlier this month arguing that his addiction to Allman, son of the late musician Greg Allman, is “at his worst” with drugs. In legal documents, Cher asserted that Elijah “immediately” spends any money he receives “almost exclusively” on “drugs, expensive hotels, and limousine rides.” However, the judge overseeing the case determined there were insufficient grounds to grant conservatorship, according to People magazine. The judge maintained that, at this time, Allman would not have access to his father's trust money because he is facing legal charges and remains hospitalized in a psychiatric facility. He appeared at the hearing via video call. According to the same publication, Cher's son appeared at Friday's hearing via video call from the hospital. His legal situation is complex: he was arrested in February in Concord, New Hampshire, on charges including two counts of simple assault, burglary, criminal threats, and disorderly conduct. In March, he was arrested again in the city of Windham, in the same state, on charges of burglary, two counts of property damage, and violation of his bail. According to TMZ, Allman's lawyer stated in a recent court filing that his client's release on bail is conditional upon "his admission to a residential treatment program for the dual diagnosis of mental health issues and substance use disorders." This is not the first time Cher has tried to gain custody of her son. In 2023, The "Believe" singer filed a similar petition alleging that Elijah was "virtually unable to manage his financial resources" due to "serious mental health issues and substance abuse." On that occasion, Cher withdrew the petition the following year after her son promised to "change her lifestyle," according to her latest application.
