Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Kolkata late on Monday night on his one-day visit to West Bengal. During his one-day visit, Shah will attend the birth anniversary celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore on Tuesday and lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various development projects of the Land Port Authority of India and the Border Security Force (BSF).

Shah's state visit will begin on Tuesday morning with paying homage at the statue of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore at Jorasanku Thakurbari in Kolkata. Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is celebrated on 9th May to mark the birth of the great Bengali poet. Home Minister Shah is scheduled to participate in this program on Tuesday. Tagore is known as the poet and Gurudev of Bengal. He had made significant contribution in the field of art, literature and music. Tagore received the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his poetry collection "Gitanjali". He also composed the national anthems of India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

After attending the Tagore Jayanti event, Shah will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various development projects of the Land Port Authority of India and the BSF at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) Petrapole in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, located on the India-Bangladesh border.

ICP Petrapole, located on the international border between India and Bangladesh, is the largest land port in South Asia. It is situated at a distance of about 80 km from Kolkata city of West Bengal.

The Home Minister will also attend an event related to the release of the full-length domestic film 'Luminaries of Bengal' and the inauguration of various projects at Science City, Kolkata in the evening. The home minister's day-long visit to West Bengal will end with him attending a function organized by cultural organization 'Khola Hawa' (open air) on the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at the Science City in Kolkata.

Earlier, senior BJP leader and director of cultural organization 'Khola Hawa' Swapan Dasgupta had said that on his request the Union Minister would attend the function. Dasgupta said Amit Shah is inspired by Tagore's philosophy and spirituality. During the program, he will talk about the impact Gurudev has had on the people of this country over the years.
