New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Saturday stayed the appointment process of Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati as the new Shankaracharya in the Jyotish Peeth of Uttarakhand for the time being. A bench of Justice BR Gavai and Justice BV Nagarathna passed this order after being informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
No support for Govardhan Math
This bench of the Supreme Court was informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the Shankaracharya of Govardhan Math in Puri has filed an affidavit not supporting the appointment of Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati as the new Shankaracharya of the Jyotish Peeth. The bench said that in view of the request made in the application, this application has been allowed.
Avimukteshwaranand made false claim
The Supreme Court was hearing a petition alleging that Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati had falsely claimed that he was appointed as the successor of the Jyotish Peeth by late Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati. The matter is pending in the Supreme Court since 2020.
attempt to thwart court proceedings
The petition states that a deliberate attempt has been made to ensure that the proceedings before this court become fruitless and that a person who is not qualified and ineligible, takes office unauthorisedly. It said that such attempts need to be restrained by an interim order of the court and hence the application can be allowed.
Required documents given in Supreme Court
It has been said in the petition that necessary documents are being filed to show that the appointment of the new Shankaracharya is completely false. The reason for this is that the process of making new Shankaracharyas in Jyotish Peeth is a complete violation of the accepted procedure of appointment.
