Members of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) arrived at the Sarhali Kalan police station in Punjab's Tarn Taran on Sunday and carried out investigation. On the other hand, the Punjab Police has transferred SHO Prakash Singh of the police station after the rocket launcher attack on police station Sarhali.
The Sarhali police station in Tarn Taran was attacked with an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) at around 11.30 pm on Friday amid terror alert. This is the second RPG attack in seven months. Eight to ten policemen, including the SHO, were present in the police station when the attack took place. There has been no casualty in the attack. However, the window panes of the Saanjh Kendra building adjacent to the police station were damaged.
DGP Gaurav Yadav, who came to visit the spot, believed that it was a terrorist attack. The RPG used in the attack is a military-grade hardware, which was fired from a rocket launcher. It has been smuggled from Pakistan. The Punjab Police will investigate the matter in coordination with the BSF and central agencies, he added. Meanwhile, NIA has also started investigation.
Late in the evening, two officers of the investigating agency visited the Sarhali police station. During this, the police have picked up seven suspects. Confirming this, Tarn Taran SSP Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said that some suspects are being questioned. At the same time, Gurpatwant Singh Pannu of the terrorist organization Sikh for Justice (SJF) has taken responsibility for the attack.
According to the police, at 11.22 pm, unidentified persons fired an RPG from the Amritsar-Bathinda highway, targeting the Sarhali police station. He collided with the iron gate of the police station and fell into the evening center built along it. This center provides services like copy of FIR, Passport Verification and No Objection Certificate. As soon as the grenade fell, the police personnel came out of the police station, but by then the attackers had fled. Forensic team and an army squad also reached the spot to investigate. Police have registered an FIR in this regard under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). Experts say that if the grenade had exploded directly in the police station, there could have been a huge loss. It is also learned that Russian-made RPGs have been used in the attack, which are capable of penetrating thick walls.
Rocket launcher and propeller recovered
In the preliminary investigation of the terrorist attack, the police have recovered the rocket launcher and propeller. A CCTV footage is also in the hands of the police, in which the effect of the attack is visible.
Khalistani organization took responsibility, police bid to divert investigation
The responsibility of the rocket attack has been taken by the banned Khalistani terrorist organization Sikh for Justice. Police has started investigation in this direction. Although senior officials say that this may be an attempt to divert from the investigation. After the attack, an audio clip of this terrorist organization is viral, in which the organization chief Pannu is taking responsibility for the terrorist attack.
Attack like Mohali: DGP
Responding to a question, the DGP said that there seem to be many similarities between the incident of this attack and the Mohali RPG attack. Initial investigation looks like Mohali attack. However, the forensic details are being examined. On May 9 this year, an RPG attack was carried out on the intelligence headquarters of the police in Mohali. Only the building was damaged in the attack. Mohali attack was linked to Canadian terrorist Lakhbir Singh Landa. Most of the people involved in the attack were caught by the police, but the police could not reach the main conspirator.
Enemy panicked, hence attacks at night: DGP
After visiting the spot, the DGP said that it appears that our enemy country is in panic and the cowardly attack was carried out in the night to divert attention from it. In fact, within the last one month, all the weapons-heroin and ammunition he had sent by drone were caught. This year alone more than 200 drones crossed the border. Most of these drones have been caught. The police is probing all angles and theories. He said local links of terrorists sitting in Pakistan, Europe and North America are being probed.
There was an alert of terrorist attack
Multiple police officials in Punjab have confirmed that there was an alert for terror attacks on police stations and government buildings in the state. Last week, this information was given to the top officials by the intelligence agencies. Under this, the police security of many police stations and buildings in the state was increased. In many districts, the police officers held meetings and instructed the policemen to be alert.
