Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently lauded the establishment of Tata Group’s semiconductor fabrication unit in Assam, emphasizing the significance of this project for India’s technological advancement. Speaking on the subject, Scindia pointed out how the semiconductor fabrication unit, also known as a “fab”, plays a critical role in the backward integration of telecom equipment, from mobile phones to routers and switches.
Semiconductor Fab’s Role in Telecom
During a press briefing, Scindia explained, “The fab is backward integration, which is chips that go into every single part of telecom equipment. Whether it’s your mobile phone, routers, or switches, it has become an essential part of the circuitry for life.” He underscored how essential semiconductors are for the seamless functioning of telecom networks, highlighting the importance of local production of such crucial components.
The communications minister praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his visionary leadership in bringing semiconductor manufacturing to India. “The backward integration that the Prime Minister has pioneered for India was extremely important,” he noted, reflecting on how this strategic move will significantly enhance India’s telecom sector. Localized production of semiconductor chips will allow India to become more self-reliant and reduce dependency on imports for essential technologies.
Fabs Across India: Assam and Beyond
The Tata Group’s fabrication unit in Assam is not the only one on the horizon. Scindia mentioned that multiple semiconductor fabs are being set up across the country, with another unit being established in Gujarat. “There is another fab coming up in Gujarat,” he added, showcasing the government’s commitment to expanding India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities across various states. These efforts are part of India’s broader strategy to become a global leader in chip production and related technologies.
India-US Collaboration on Semiconductor Manufacturing
One of the most notable points made by Scindia was the recent agreement between India and the United States to jointly manufacture semiconductor fabs for defense applications. “The PM has just signed an agreement with the US to manufacture fabs for defense uses - for both the US and India,” Scindia revealed. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in strengthening India’s defense technology capabilities, as well as fostering greater cooperation with one of its key international partners.
The defense-oriented fabs will focus on developing advanced chips that can be used in defense systems, adding another dimension to India’s rapidly growing semiconductor industry. This partnership is expected to enhance India’s defense sector’s technological prowess while creating more opportunities for domestic manufacturing and innovation.
