Behind the bad habit of biting nails there are psychological meanings that are not necessarily linked to nerves, anxiety or reaction to an uncomfortable situation. Experts assure that it is also due to more complex factors.

First of all, you should know that this behavior is called onychophagia and consists of the repetitive and persistent action of biting the nails or cuticles. Generally, it begins during adolescence and in some cases continues for years, becoming a behavior that is difficult to control.

In this sense, experts recommend paying attention to the possible emotional causes that could be behind the problem.

Nail biting has to do with emotional conflicts

Onychophagia does not always appear as a consequence of nerves. Through TikTok, an Argentine doctor and content creator, named “Bruno”, points out that it may be related to difficulties regulating emotions, managing frustration or facing situations that generate psychological tension.

In many cases, the person bites their nails automatically while studying, working, watching television, or even during moments of apparent tranquility. According to the expert, this occurs because the behavior can become an unconscious response to relieve internal sensations of discomfort, boredom or restlessness.

Some studies have also found links between onychophagia and disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders and certain depressive symptoms.

This does not mean that all people who bite their nails suffer from one of these conditions, but it does mean that the habit can be a sign that there is emotional discomfort that deserves attention.

The physical and psychological risk of nail biting

Although many believe that nail biting is a harmless habit, specialists warn that it can cause significant physical problems.

Nails and fingers can suffer constant injuries, facilitating the appearance of infections caused by bacteria and other microorganisms present on the hands. Additionally, repeated pressure on the teeth can cause tooth wear, minor fractures, and changes in the bite.

Likewise, on an emotional level the consequences are significant. Those who suffer from onychophagia feel ashamed of the appearance of their hands, avoid showing them in public and experience a decrease in self-esteem.

Finally, specialists recommend identifying the reasons behind this behavior, in addition to applying strategies such as bitter-tasting nail polish, using gloves and other techniques that logically cut the contact of the nails with the teeth.
