The Department of Justice opens an investigation on the attorney general of New York
The Department of Justice has subpoenaed New York Attorney General Letitia James over its Trump Organization fraud investigation.
The Justice Department has subpoenaed the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James as part of a criminal investigation, according to sources cited by several media outlets, in the latest example by Donald Trump's administration Trump taking on those he perceives as adversaries of the president.
The U.S. attorney's office for the Northern District of New York issued two subpoenas seeking information about James' investigations into the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association, according to sources cited by outlets including CNN and The Washington Post.
NBC News also reported that the government's new cases focus on whether James deprived Trump and the NRA of their legal rights in their civil lawsuits.
One of the subpoenas focused on James' successful civil fraud case against President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization, people familiar with the investigation said. A judge ordered Trump and his company to pay more than $450 million in penalties and interest in 2024. The second subpoena against James is related to James' high-profile litigation against the National Rifle Association, which led to court-ordered reforms of the group, the people said. Attorney General Pam Bondi this week appointed Ed Martin, a former acting U.S. attorney in Washington, to serve as a special counsel in a separate mortgage fraud investigation against James. The Justice Department has also convened a grand jury investigation into James in Albany, New York, with sources indicating that the grand jury investigation into James is about disenfranchisement meaning the violation of a person's constitutional rights, against Donald Trump.
Abbe Lowell, a lawyer for James quoted by NBC News, He said the James fraud investigation into Trump and his companies “has to be the most blatant and desperate example yet of how this administration is waging the president’s campaign of political retaliation.” “Weaponizing the Justice Department to try to punish an elected official for doing her job is an assault on the rule of law and a dangerous escalation by this administration,” Lowell added.
