Six relatives arrested after death of newborn attacked by dog ??in Indiana
Initially the case was considered an accident, but authorities pointed out alleged conditions of negligence and an environment considered uninhabitable.
An investigation into the death of a one-week-old baby in Indiana led to the arrest of six members of his family and multiple charges related to alleged neglect.
The case occurred in Markle, Indiana, where Jason Anthony Weaver died on September 4 of last year after suffering injuries during an attack by a family dog.
Initially, the death was considered an accident.
However, court documents obtained by Daily Mail indicate that the course of the case changed after investigators conducted an inspection of the home and reported conditions that they described as incompatible with habitability.
Among those arrested are the minor's parents, Austin Kinsey, 26, and Violet Weaver, 24. Also arrested were the child's grandfather, Timothy Kinsey; uncle, Tony Kinsey; as well as Rita Wickey and Michael Wickey.
All face charges of neglect of a dependent person, while some of them also face additional accusations linked to the handling of the animal.
Research included background information on the dog's behavior
According to documents cited by authorities, the attack was committed by a five-year-old husky-pitbull mix named Chomp.
Relatives stated that the animal had shown affectionate behavior towards the baby, but they also recognized a history of jealousy, territorial behavior and previous episodes of aggression towards people and other animals.
According to the investigation, before the child's birth, some family members considered giving up or sacrificing the animal.
One of the testimonies collected by investigators indicated that the baby's father was aware of concerns about the dog's behavior, although he allegedly decided to keep him.
Authorities described unsanitary conditions inside the home
Court records also describe that during the inspection of the property, agents found an accumulation of garbage, the presence of insects, general dirt, and difficulties moving within the property.
According to the police report, the Huntington County Health Department subsequently ordered the home to be evacuated after determining that it was not in suitable conditions for habitation.
The investigation also indicated that the dog involved and other animals were removed from the scene. Subsequently, the animal identified in the attack was euthanized.
The autopsy determined that the baby died from injuries consistent with blunt trauma.
In the obituary released by his family, Jason was remembered as a boy who enjoyed listening to music and whose memory would live on among his loved ones.
The judicial process against the relatives is still ongoing.
