House of Representatives votes to limit Trump's powers in war against Iran
President Donald Trump took a hit from some members of his own party
The House of Representatives voted in favor of limiting the powers of President Donald Trump in the war declared against Iran that has been affecting the global economy for more than three months.
The vote was 215 to 208 and highlights that Republican representatives Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson supported a resolution that leaves the New York magnate in a bad light in the eyes of the entire world.
Democrat Gregory Meeks, representative of New York and ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was the one who introduced the resolution.
Now, the so-called concurrent resolution must be approved by both chambers, but it will not be sent to the nation's president to sign it.
Under the War Powers Act, the 79-year-old president is prohibited from keeping US troops on active missions for more than 60 days without congressional approval.
"I think it is very dangerous to deprive the government and the commander in chief of the ability to negotiate at this time. That is what this does. It weakens us, it weakens our position and our influence in the peace negotiations in this situation. 'Operation Epic Fury' has concluded.
The president is now in the process of concluding a peace agreement, and we need to give him the freedom to do so. “I think that a resolution on war powers at this time is very inappropriate, and something very negative and dangerous for the country,” said Mike Johnson, president of the House of Representatives, in an interview with the CNN television network.
