Sheinbaum and Trump postpones new tariffs on Mexican products after call
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed with Donald Trump to postpone the entry into force of new tariffs
During her press conference At a morning press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum explained that the decision was made after a phone call with the US president last Saturday.
“I spoke with President Trump and we are going to give a few more weeks to close the issue, which is already well advanced, of the 54 non-tariff barriers that are pending,” said Sheinbaum.
Dialogue on the USMCA
The tariffs were scheduled to take effect on November 1, but the agreement grants an extension in order to conclude negotiations on trade restrictions. According to the president, both governments maintain an ongoing dialogue to resolve outstanding issues within the framework of the United States-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA).
Sheinbaum noted that it was a brief and exclusively commercial conversation, without addressing migration or security issues.
A new call is pending
"We agreed that they continue working on other issues, but we will speak again to close this trade point in the coming weeks," she added.
The Mexican president indicated that this was the tenth communication between the two leaders since Trump returned to the White House. The Mexican government seeks to maintain the tariff advantages of the USMCA and avoid measures that could affect national exports.
