Chris Van Hollen considers running as Democratic presidential candidate
Chris Van Hollen, Democratic senator, contemplates the possibility of running for the presidency by betting on a vision of government different from the traditional one
Considering that his fellow Democrats are doing a poor job in gaining public support for the upcoming elections, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen is considering running as an option on the ballot.
During an interview with The Hill newspaper, the politician who has held his seat in the Senate for nine years warns that the leadership of his party is making the mistake of only displaying Donald Trump's poor performance at the head of the White House without promoting alternatives to improve the situation.
"I think the Democratic Party needs to do more than just tell people what we oppose. In my opinion, we need to fight what I perceive as a completely illegal Trump administration, but we also need to tell people what we will do to change the status quo.
"I don't think the Democratic Party has done a good job of communicating to people what our principles are," he said.
From his perspective, one of the great democratic challenges is to break with the model of dividing citizens between the right and the left as alternatives for which to vote, since this concept no longer applies in a world where the interests of large financial groups are those that influence governance.
"I think the traditional view of left versus right has become obsolete. I really believe that, right now, if you look at our economy, it is rigged in favor of very powerful special interests. It's more about the elite versus the rest," he stressed.
Van Hollen considers it pertinent to adopt part of the strategy that managed to place Donald Trump twice at the head of the White House.
"The reason Donald Trump was elected was because people were fed up with the status quo. In my opinion, he has broken it in the worst way, but we must take advantage of that feeling.
The idea of running is to want to change things for the better. “I am testing the waters because I believe this is a crucial moment for our country,” he said.
