Sheinbaum regrets the death of three Mexicans due to asphyxiation during celebrations for Mexico's victory against Ecuad
Among the victims are two women, ages 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man who were near the Angel of Independence.
The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed this Wednesday her solidarity with the families of the three people who died during the celebrations held in the vicinity of the Angel of Independence after the victory of the Mexican team over Ecuador in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup.
“Our solidarity, our support for three people who unfortunately died yesterday,” said the president during her morning conference.
Sheinbaum pointed out that the Government of Mexico City will report on the events and assured that the capital authorities maintain contact with the victims' families.
"The head of government is going to give a conference, I don't know if it is her or her team, at 10 in the morning about this situation here in the city. And once we have more information, of course, we will inform them and always offer our condolences and the head of government is in contact with their families," he stated.
The president added that she instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, to provide support to the family members.
“And today I gave instructions to Rosa Icela to also support her in everything necessary,” he said.
The statements come after the Command Post of the Health Sector of the Government of Mexico City reported the death due to asphyxiation of three people during the celebrations held on Tuesday night in the Angel of Independence area.
Among the victims are two women, ages 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man. According to the official report, two of them were found unconscious at the intersection of Hamburgo and Lancaster streets, in the Juárez neighborhood, while the third was found on Berna street, in the same area of the Cuauhtémoc mayor's office.
The three people received resuscitation maneuvers and were transferred to receive medical attention; However, they were later declared dead due to asphyxiation.
For her part, the head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, reported that the capital's administration maintains contact with the victims' families to provide them with accompaniment and support.
According to the capital's government, around a million people gathered on Tuesday night in the vicinity of the Angel of Independence to celebrate Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador, a result that allowed the national team to advance to the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. EFE
