The president of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Monday that he has ordered a stop to the bombings against Iran to negotiate an agreement to end the conflict, but warned that he will resume the attacks if the talks fail.
"We are in very deep conversations with Iran. If they do not work, we will return to forceful military actions," the president declared to the digital newspaper Axios.
Asked how much time he is willing to dedicate to diplomacy, Trump responded: "Not much time. Either they move quickly or they don't move at all."
The president explained that he decided last Friday to stop the attacks against the Islamic Republic because he was asked to do so by his allies in the Middle East who are mediating in the conflict.
“All the people who deal with Iran asked me: ‘Don't shoot,'” he explained.
The president's statements come before meeting this Tuesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who will be in Washington to attend the funeral of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
“I'm going to talk to Bibi about the fact that if I weren't president, Iran would already have nuclear weapons and Israel would have been destroyed,” he said.
Last Thursday, the United States carried out its latest round of bombings against the Islamic Republic, in the thirteenth consecutive day of attacks since the truce agreed in June was broken. EFE
