According to an interview with Punchbowl News, Trump acknowledged that, despite constant political clashes with the New York legislator, he considers it possible to build a working relationship if the Democrats regain control of the House in the legislative elections.
“He's tough because I'm tough on him,” Trump said of Jeffries. When asked if he could negotiate with the Democratic leader, he responded without hesitation: "I think so. I would probably get along very well with him."
A scenario that will depend on the 2026 elections
Hakeem Jeffries' chance of presiding over the House will depend on the Democratic Party regaining the majority in the midterm elections. If it comes to fruition, the legislator would make history by becoming the first African-American president of the House of Representatives.
Although both politicians held a meeting in the Oval Office in September 2025, their relationship has been marked by public attacks. Jeffries has on different occasions blamed Trump for the increase in the cost of living in the United States and for the handling of international conflicts such as the war with Iran.
Political differences remain
Despite the president's conciliatory tone, so far Hakeem Jeffries' office has not issued a response to the statements.
Trump's words draw attention because they come at a time when the confrontation between Republicans and Democrats dominates the political debate leading up to the legislative elections.
