Tulsi Gabbard announces her departure from the Trump administration starting in June
According to reports, the official will resign for family and health reasons
The Director of National Intelligence of the United States, Tulsi Gabbard, will officially leave her position within President Donald Trump's administration at the end of June, in a decision that once again generates movements within the Republican cabinet.
According to Reuters, Gabbard personally announced her resignation during a meeting in the Oval Office on Friday.
According to the publication, the former congresswoman from Hawaii explained that she will leave the National Intelligence Directorate to accompany her husband, Abraham Williams, who was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.
An unexpected departure in the midst of political tension
According to Fox News, Gabbard notified the president that her last day as head of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) will be June 30, 2026.
“Unfortunately, I must present my resignation,” the official reportedly wrote in a letter addressed to Trump, cited by the American media.
His departure represents a new rearrangement within the Republican administration, especially since in recent weeks versions of possible internal tensions related to foreign policy and intelligence issues were already circulating.
Various analysts noted that Gabbard had distanced herself from some positions promoted by Trump, particularly on issues related to Iran and international strategy.
The White House has not yet confirmed who would temporarily assume leadership of the US Intelligence community, made up of 18 federal agencies.
From Democratic figure to Trump ally
Tulsi Gabbard was for years a relevant figure within the Democratic Party. However, after breaking with the traditional structure of the political formation, it progressively approached the conservative movement led by Trump.
Her appointment as Director of National Intelligence in February 2025 generated controversy from the beginning due to her critical positions on US military interventionism and her past statements related to Russia and Syria.
During his administration, he promoted an internal reorganization of intelligence agencies and defended a hard line against what he described as “politicization” of the national security services.
He also clashed sharply with Democratic legislators over investigations linked to the 2020 presidential elections and over the handling of national security reports.
So far, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence has not issued additional official comments on Gabbard's departure.
