Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was reunited with his father Julio Cesar Chavez after he was released on parole in Mexico, where he is being investigated for alleged ties to the Cartel of Sinaloa.
In a video shared on social media, the two can be seen meeting at the Coliseo Boxing Club gym in Hermosillo, Sonora. The Mexican Grand Champion gave his son a kiss on the mouth and a big hug.
For his part, Chavez Jr. seemed happy to see his father again after being detained by ICE more than a month ago in the United States and deported to Mexico, where he received conditional release while his case is investigated.
At the hearing held on August 24, the Attorney General's Office of the Republic of Mexico presented 21 pieces of evidence linking Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to the Sinaloa Cartel, but the former champion's legal team questioned its validity because none of it proves he participated in criminally reprehensible conduct.
Arrest and extradition of Chavez Jr.
Chavez Jr. was detained by ICE on July 2 in Los Angeles for having an irregular immigration status, since his B2 tourist visa expired in 2024. The Mexican applied for permanent residency in the United States after marrying Frida Munoz, a U.S. citizen who authorities say is linked to the Sinaloa Cartel because she was in a relationship with the late son of Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman. Shortly after, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that Chavez Jr. had an arrest warrant issued by the Attorney General's Office in Mexico since March 2023 for organized crime and arms trafficking. For this reason, he was deported and imprisoned in Cefereso 11, a maximum security prison in Hermosillo. Previously, the boxer had had problems with addiction and with the law in Los Angeles for possession of a ghost gun in early 2024. After entering rehabilitation and having the charges dismissed, Junior returned to the ring with a victory over Uriah Hall on July 20 of that same year.
In his last fight before his arrest, the Mexican lost to Jake Paul by unanimous decision. Now the 38-year-old son of the Mexican Grand Champion—who has a professional record of 54 wins (34 by knockout), 7 losses, and one draw—is once again facing legal trouble.
