Cristiano Ronaldo shows a Portugal team “always united”
The Portugal captain tried, through his social networks, to calm the rumors of bad weather in the locker room
The Portuguese team is going through days of debate in the middle of the World Cup after the 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Amid criticism of the result and discussions about the team's performance, Cristiano Ronaldo decided to send a public message aimed at reinforcing the image of unity within the group.
The Portuguese captain took to his social networks to share a photograph with several members of the team. They all appear smiling in an image accompanied by a brief phrase: “Always united.” Later, the forward published a story related to his career in the national team and added another message: “Focus on what you can control.”
The publication appeared in a context marked by the questions that arose after Portugal's presentation in the tournament. The draw against the African team generated discontent among some of the fans and opened an intense debate in the media about the collective functioning of the team and the role of its top figure.
Ronaldo's performance was also under observation. The forward played 90 minutes of the match, recorded 25 interventions with the ball and failed to make any shots on goal during the match.
João Neves' statements fuel the discussion
While the analysis of Portuguese performance continued, statements by João Neves became another focus of attention. The midfielder, who appears in the photograph shared by Ronaldo, was consulted about the influence of the historic scorer within the group.
According to the newspaper O Jogo, Neves stated: "We know what Cristiano has done for our team, but at this moment, I think that he and everyone else see him as just another teammate who comes to lend a hand; he is no different from the others and he will contribute the same as everyone else. We are very united and that, in the long term, will make the difference. This draw is not going to discourage us."
Another version of his statements also circulated widely in Portugal. In it, the player expressed: "We know what Cristiano did for our team, for the world of football. But at this moment I feel like he is one more to help." Later he added: “He is no different from us, he is here to contribute like everyone else.”
The midfielder's words provoked various interpretations and increased attention on the internal environment of the team. While some sectors questioned Ronaldo's current relevance within the team, others defended the figure of the 41-year-old forward.
Before the start of the World Cup, the attacker himself had already answered questions about his physical condition. When he was consulted before traveling to the United States, he replied: “Physically I'm fine, haven't you seen the games?”
In parallel, coach Roberto Martínez came out in defense of his captain when asked why he did not replace him during the draw against Congo. The coach's response was forceful: “It makes no sense to remove the top scorer in world football from a game in which goals are needed.”
