Former American boxer Floyd Mayweather faces a complex legal panorama after being the subject of a civil action in the courts of the state of New York, starring in another controversy in his life.

A sports entertainment promotion company is demanding the return of a million-dollar sum after alleging that the athlete did not comply with the contractual agreements previously signed to hold two high-profile commercial exhibition bouts.

The complaint was formalized by the firm CSI Entertainment, which maintains that Floyd Mayweather breached the agreed commitments after having received advance payments to ensure the holding of matches against former world champions Mike Tyson and Manny Pacquiao.

According to court records initially obtained by the news portal TMZ Sports, the plaintiff claims that the exclusivity rights to broadcast and promote both shows were violated.

Breach of contracts and diversion of exclusive rights

The legal file details that the promoter transferred an initial amount of $4.5 million to Floyd Mayweather's representation company, Frist Apex Ventures, in order to secure exclusive organizational rights.

Subsequently, the company made an additional disbursement of $150,000 to complete the contractual guarantees of the first commitment, an administrative step that, according to the lawsuit, had the fighter's signature of validity.

Despite the existence of this initial agreement, the plaintiff company alleges that Floyd Mayweather took an alternative business route by unilaterally announcing an exhibition bout against Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis, scheduled to take place under the protection of another promotional firm. Likewise, the plaintiffs claim that the fighter secretly signed a broadcast contract with a different company to bring the rematch with Pacquiao to the Netflix streaming platform at The Sphere venue in Las Vegas, omitting the exclusive rights of CSI Entertainment.

Faced with this situation, the promoter's legal representatives requested a restraining order from the New York court to prevent the billboard from taking place in Greece next week.

The plaintiffs argue that considerable technical and financial resources have already been invested in the preparation of the original evenings, and that the development of alternative engagements by the boxer would cause irreparable financial losses for the brand.

Criminal proceedings in the state of Nevada for fraud

Adding to the complications of the civil lawsuit on the east coast is a criminal process in the state of Nevada, where the Clark County prosecutor's office accuses Floyd Mayweather of two serious crimes derived from the acquisition of a high-end item.

The formal charges filed by western state authorities include the crimes of theft of property with a value equal to or greater than $100,000 and issuing a bad check with intent to defraud.

The criminal accusation details that the athlete used a bank account without the corresponding balance to issue a check for the amount of 200 thousand dollars at an exclusive items store in Las Vegas.

The legal representative of the affected commercial establishment, Marc Cook, told the sports media ESPN about the long waiting process that preceded the formal complaint to the judicial authorities.

“The reason for the delay is that my client trusted Mayweather and was trying to give him every opportunity to comply with that, and it got to the point where he was not receiving answers or money for a watch that Mayweather had for more than a year,” lawyer Marc Cook explained to ESPN after justifying the start of legal actions that now summon the athlete to appear in court in September.
