Dario Benedetto terminates his contract with Newell's in Argentina and is once again without a club
The Argentine striker failed to score in nine matches and is leaving after not being included in the new coach's plans.
Dario Benedetto is going through one of the most difficult moments of his career. At 35, the striker terminated his contract with Newell's Old Boys of Rosario, Argentina, after just four months at the club and without having scored a single goal. The decision was made after Lucas Bernardi, the newly appointed manager, informed him that he would not be considered for the remainder of the Clausura Tournament. His arrival at the Rosario club had been promoted by Cristian Fabbiani, who was confident he could revive the former Boca Juniors player. However, after the "Ogre's" dismissal—following the 3-1 defeat against Argentinos Juniors—the new coaching staff began a restructuring in which Benedetto had no place. A bitter end and an endless streak. In addition to the former Boca player, Bernardi sidelined Gaspar Iniguez, Josue Colman, and Alejo Tabares, who were relegated to the reserve team. Benedetto, plagued by injuries and a string of goal droughts, only played nine official matches for the red and black jersey. His time there was also marred by the missed penalty against Belgrano de Cordoba. Before arriving in Rosario, the striker had a discreet stint at Olimpia of Paraguay. He signed with the team in February 2025, hoping to rediscover the form that earned him a place on the Argentine national team and made him a star at Boca Juniors. However, his time in Asuncion ended in just four months: 13 matches, no goals, and several clashes with the fans.
“Physically I feel good, and my football skills are good too, but I'm lacking goals, and for a striker, that's crucial. I haven't had many scoring opportunities, very few, I still haven't been able to convert, but I'm confident in my physical condition. The goals will come, and that will change,” he said at the time, although the drought has continued to this day.
His last goal dates back to February 5, 2024.when he scored for Boca in a 2-0 win against Tigre. Since then, he has gone 39 games without scoring, spread across Boca, Queretaro, Olimpia, and Newell's. An unexpected streak for a player with 166 career goals, domestic and international titles, and stints at clubs like Arsenal, America, Tijuana, Olympique de Marseille, and Elche.
