Despite elimination from the World Cup, the coach of Peru is ratified in his position, at least until November
Oscar Ibanez revealed that, even before the thrashing against Uruguay, the FPF had already asked him to coach the friendly matches in November
The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) decided that Oscar Ibanez will remain in charge of the Peruvian National Team at least until the international friendlies in November. The confirmation comes after the elimination heading into the 2026 World Cup, amid a context of uncertainty about the future of the coach.
The interim coach revealed that it was the president of the FPF, Agustin Lozano, who asked him to continue in the position and, together with his technical team, he accepted the challenge to provide stability in the transition towards the new qualifying cycle.
In a press conference, Oscar Ibanez detailed the conversation he had with the leadership before the match against Uruguay:
“Prior to the match against Uruguay, we had a meeting with President Agustin Lozano and he asked us to continue until the next friendly matches in November and we said yes,” said the coach.
He also highlighted the improvement shown by the national team in the final stretch of the Qualifiers:
“If these last five matches had been the first of the Qualifiers, we would be fifth in the table. And if we win tomorrow, we would get 8 points out of 18, which would give us the same score as Paraguay, who qualified for the World Cup," he added.
The FPF has already confirmed that the Peruvian National Team will play two international friendlies in November and will be with Ibanez as coach, against Russia and against Chile.
These matches will serve as preparation to evaluate the squad and test variants, but already thinking about a project towards the 2030 World Cup.
