Peña was sentenced for child sexual abuse crimes
The Dominican Dagoberto Peña, former basketball player for Deportivo La Coruña, Breogán, Estudiantes and Barcelona B, among other teams, was sentenced this Tuesday to 60 years in prison in the United States for child sexual abuse crimes.
“According to judicial documents, from October 2024 to February 2026, Peña used and persuaded two minors to participate in an act. s sexually explicit in the purpose of producing visual representations of their sexual abuse,” the Department of Justice reported in a statement.
Peña pleaded guilty on January 23rd and was sentenced to supervised conditional release for life, in case he is released from prison, and was ordered to register as a sexual offender.
The 37-year-old former player participated in the 2019 World with Dominican Republic and ended his sports career in 2023 in the rows of the Alega Cantabria Group.
Currently practicing as a physical education teacher and coach in Florida.
The investigation began in 2025 when the victim's father discovered “inappropriate communications” by the former basketball player with a minor.
“Peña received images of a minor naked and engaging in sexually explicit acts. In addition, images and videos were found that Peña had taken during the sexual abuse of two minors,” the Department of Justice added.
The convicted also possessed images of a third minor engaging in sexually explicit acts.
