Fernando Gago, former Chivas coach, underwent emergency surgery in Chile
The Argentine Fernando Gago is remembered for his time in the Liga MX in Chivas and Necaxa
Universidad de Chile's victory over O'Higgins was put in the background a few hours after the match. The attention shifted from the field of play to the health status of Fernando Gago, coach of the blue team and remembered for his time at Chivas del Guadalajara in Mexico, who had to be urgently transferred to a care center in Santiago after presenting a cardiovascular problem.
The situation generated concern within the club and among the fans, especially because the Argentine coach had normally directed the match that ended with a 2-0 victory at the National Stadium. Even at the end of the game, he participated in the press conference and shared his impressions about his team's performance.
It was during the early morning when the transfer to a clinic in the Chilean capital took place. According to local media reports, the admission occurred after he began to present symptoms that led to an immediate medical evaluation. Subsequently, he underwent surgery and was under specialized observation.
The institution itself confirmed the situation through a statement posted on social networks. “We inform that our technical director, Fernando Gago, is undergoing a series of cardiovascular tests and will not be in charge of training today,” said Universidad de Chile.
University of Chile reorganizes its sports planning
While the coach remains under medical supervision, the club has already taken measures to guarantee the continuity of its sporting activities. The entity also reported that the Argentine strategist "is in good condition and is accompanied by our medical staff."
The information provided by different Chilean media agrees that the former Boca Juniors and Real Madrid footballer will continue under medical control while his recovery progresses. For now, it has not been determined how long he will remain away from his usual responsibilities leading the team.
The absence of Gago will force the technical leadership to be modified for the next commitments. Universidad de Chile has a match scheduled against Santiago Wanderers for the Chile Cup and it will be his assistant, Fabricio Coloccini, who will take charge of the team from the bench.
The news came at a positive time for the university team. The victory achieved against O'Higgins, corresponding to a duel pending on date 13, allowed the blue squad to rise to third position in the standings with 24 points. The team was two units behind Universidad Católica and twelve behind the leader Colo Colo.
Gago, 40, is thus going through an unexpected health episode while living his time at the head of the Chilean club. For the moment, the University of Chile maintains permanent monitoring of his medical evolution and has conveyed peace of mind by reporting that the coach is stable and accompanied by specialists.
