Eddie Hearn on lack of agreement for Ortiz vs Ennis Frustrating
Eddie Hearn explained that he doesn't know why negotiations haven't progressed, but believes Vergil Ortiz Jr. is the one who doesn't want the fight
Eddie Hearn, promoter of Matchroom Boxing, expressed that it is extremely frustrating that they have not reached an agreement with Vergil Ortiz Jr.'s team to finalize the fight with Jaron 'Boots' Ennis.
In statements to the press collected by Boxing News 24, Hearn explained that he doesn't know why they haven't progressed in negotiations, but believes that Ortiz Jr. is the one who doesn't want the fight.
“We're just waiting. It's extremely frustrating. We don't understand it. We reached an agreement with Golden Boy. I think Golden Boy and Oscar (De la Hoya) want that fight. 'Boots' is signed for the fight. I don't understand what's going on. Who else could Ortiz fight? he said.
“We hope that Vergil Ortiz accepts the challenge and proves that he is the "The best in the world. In my opinion, he's number one and number two at 154 pounds. So let's make it happen," he added. A few days ago, trainer Robert Garcia commented that Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Boots Ennis had begun negotiations to finalize a fight in 2026 and that both teams met for a long time. Eddie Hearn also reported that an agreement has already been signed for this fight to take place, and only the Mexican-American's signature is needed. However, Oscar De La Hoya made it clear that they will only accept the fight if the terms favor Ortiz Jr. It's worth remembering that Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. were in negotiations to face each other at 147 pounds, but Boots preferred not to take the fight at that time. After this, both teams exchanged taunts, but now it seems this duel will become a reality. In his last fight, Ortiz Jr. showed no mercy to Lubin and finished him in the second round. In contrast, Ennis made a spectacular debut at 154 pounds by knocking out Uisma Lima in the first. round and winning the WBA interim championship. 'Boots' Ennis, 27, is a former unified IBF and WBA welterweight champion, and he made a strong debut at 154 pounds. The American fighter is undefeated after 36 fights, 31 of them by knockout.
For his part, Vergil Ortiz Jr., 24, defended his interim WBC super welterweight championship and is ready to face anyone next. The Mexican-American boxer maintains his undefeated record after 23 fights, 21 of them by knockout in his professional career.
