Hector Moreno, the last of the Under-17 World Champions who remained active in Liga MX, with Rayados de Monterrey announced his official retirement from football this Friday through an emotional video posted on social media.

Moreno, with a career spanning almost two decades since his debut with the Pumas de la UNAM in 2006, after his brilliant participation in which he was crowned U-17 World Champion with the Mexican national team, in a squad he led along with Carlos Vela, Giovanni Dos Santos, Cesar Villaluz, Jorge Torres Nilo, Patricio Araujo and Adrian Aldrete, decided to leave football aside and undertake new ventures.

Moreno, after only seeing action in five games for 202 minutes in the current tournament at 37 years of age, made the difficult decision to retire from football and remain in line with a sport that allowed him to see the world and defend the Mexican national team jersey at the highest level, as he mentioned in his farewell video.

The current Monterrey defender played in 19 years as a First Division player a total of 528 matches, defending the shirts of Pumas de la UNAM, AZ Alkmaar, Espanyol de Barcelona, ??PSV Eindhoven, AC Roma, Real Sociedad, Al-Gharafa Sports Club of Qatar and Rayados de Monterrey.

While with the Mexican national team, he first defended the national jersey in the U-17 World Cup in 2005, where they were crowned against Brazil and then in the U-20 where they were eliminated by Argentina in 2007, to later make his debut with the senior team against Guatemala in 2007, which allowed him to play in the World Cups in South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.

As for titles, he was able to achieve, at club level, two Eredivisie championships with Az Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven, which placed him among the elite of international football as a central defender.

Farewell Message

The center back appeared in the farewell video wearing a cream-colored T-shirt and sweater combo with brown pants, where he made his emotional video: “Today I say goodbye to the field as a professional soccer player. With a heart full of emotion, I announce my retirement after more than twenty years dedicated to the sport that marked my life.”

The former national team player thanked his family, parents, siblings, wife, and children for being his motivation, as well as the coaches who accompanied him throughout his career.

“Soccer gave me moments I will never forget: Wearing the Mexico jersey, playing in World Cups, getting to know new countries, defending great teams, and, above all, sharing locker rooms and friendships that will always remain in my memory. But, beyond the achievements, it taught me and helped me become a better person,” he concluded.
