During the national anthem ceremony, the players placed small pink and purple school backpacks in front of them. The action was accompanied by the wearing of black armbands, as a sign of mourning for those who have died since the beginning of the conflict.

The match was played in Antalya and ended with a 2-1 victory for Nigeria. Beyond the result, the moment before the match drew attention, as the Iranian team sought to raise awareness of the tragedy that occurred on February 28, when more than 165 people died after a missile struck a primary school in the south of the country. Most of the victims were children.

The US military indicated that it has an ongoing investigation and stated that it would not attack civilians. The fact has been questioned by the United Nations and human rights organizations.

Political Tensions and Doubts about the World Cup

The international context also surrounds Iran's participation in the upcoming World Cup. The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but the presence of the Iranian team still generates uncertainty.

Iranian authorities have stated that they are not seeking to boycott the competition, although they consider it unfeasible to play matches on US soil due to tensions stemming from military actions. In this scenario, the Iranian ambassador to Mexico stated that a request was made to FIFA to move the matches scheduled in the United States to Mexican soil.

From the governing body of football, its president, Gianni Infantino, rejected that possibility. "It will take place as scheduled," he stated, referring to the tournament's progress.

In parallel, other situations related to the team's environment have arisen.The Iranian judiciary warned of the possible confiscation of assets belonging to footballer Sardar Azmoun, amid measures targeting public figures considered critical of the government. The match against Nigeria, intended as preparation for the World Cup, ended up becoming a stage for expressing grief and concern.
