Johan Vásquez could have gone to football in Saudi Arabia
Míchel González, former coach of Al Qadsiah, admitted that he tried to sign Johan Vásquez. The Mexican defender did not trust that step
Johan Vásquez has managed to remain firm in European football despite the collective problems of his club. The Mexican defender is liked by Spanish coach Míchel González. Vásquez could have gone to Saudi Arabia, but he didn't have much confidence in that step in his career.
The Mexican defender was a priority request of Míchel González during his internship with the UNAM Pumas. The Spanish coach trusted in Vásquez's qualities before leaving for Europe.
After leaving for Italian football, Míchel and Vásquez's paths took different directions. The Spanish strategist has led Al Qadsiah since 2023. Míchel acknowledged that he tried to bring Vásquez to Arab football.
"It is time for Johan to make the jump to a larger European club. During my stay in Saudi Arabia I have wanted to hire him. He had some reluctance, but he is a high-level European player," González said for Claro Sports.
Míchel González left the Al Qadsiah bench in December 2025. During his stay at the club, the Arab team conceded 86 goals in 78 games. This was a statistic that González wanted to improve with the arrival of Vásquez.
Johan Vásquez in Europe
In August 2021, Johan Vásquez left the UNAM Pumas to have his first European adventure with the Genoa shirt. The Mexican had a difficult start in Serie A with clubs that were relegated to Serie B. This caused Vásquez to change clubs, including Cremonese.
In general terms, Johan Vásquez already has 170 games in European football. The 27-year-old defender has already accumulated more than 14,000 minutes on the field. The former Pumas player has scored 8 goals in Italian football.
The Navojoa-born defender has a current contract with Genoa that ends in June 2028. Vásquez has a market value of around $14 million. Currently, Míchel does not command any process, but it would not be unreasonable for the Spanish strategist to become interested in his services again in a future process.
