Erick Sanchez considera que el futbolista mexicano es subestimado
After their dominant victory over Iceland, it was clear that Liga MX has many high-caliber players.
Erick Sanchez will return to action with Club América after playing for the Mexican national team against Iceland. El Tri secured a resounding 4-0 victory with players from the domestic league. "Chiquito" believes Mexican footballers could play in any European league, but they are undervalued.
After their dominant victory over Iceland, it was clear that Liga MX has many high-caliber players. However, it's becoming increasingly difficult for Mexican footballers to make the leap to Europe. One reason for this may be the high salary demands of Mexican clubs. But Sánchez went further, suggesting that Mexican players aren't valued as they deserve in Europe.
“I’m sure that if any of the Mexicans currently on the national team weren’t from here, they’d be sold to a European club for whatever price. I don’t know the reason, but because we’re Mexican, people in Europe think we’re not worth it, and they’re wrong because there’s incredible quality on every team, and we could play anywhere,” Sanchez said in statements published by Heraldo Deportes.
An example of this is the case of Armando Gonzalez. The Chivas de Guadalajara striker was the top scorer in the 2025 Apertura and is maintaining that pace in the 2026 Clausura. "La Hormiga" (The Ant) only managed to secure a lucrative offer from Russia. A very similar case is that of Luis Chavez, the best player at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, who went to Dynamo Kyiv.
Antonio Mohamed raised his voice
A few days ago, "El Turco" spoke about this factor. Antonio Mohamed used his player Marcel Ruiz as an example. The Argentine coach believes that if Ruiz had a different nationality, he would already be playing for a European team.
“If Marcel Ruiz had been born in another country, he would be on a major European team. That's my opinion of how he plays football. He has superb ball control, he runs the whole game, he appears in one area, then the other, he doesn't stop running for 90 minutes,” said Mohamed.
Marcel Ruiz has only managed to generate interest from several Brazilian clubs and a team in the English second division. His passport has been a burden for the Toluca midfielder, and according to Erick Sanchez, it's a problem that affects the dreams of Mexican stars in Liga MX.
