The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, affirmed that the security agencies of the federal government are working to arrest those responsible for the murder of ten people, including a former mayor, in the state of Zacatecas, whose responsibility is still unknown.
“We are working with the Security Cabinet to arrest those responsible,” declared the president without offering specific details of the line of investigation.
Last weekend the authorities found ten people murdered in various municipalities of Zacatecas. Among the fatalities was the businessman and former mayor of the municipality of Sombrerete, Ignacio Castrejón Valdez (2016-2018).
Some of these bodies were hung from a vehicle bridge, others abandoned on public roads and another on a state highway.
At the moment, the motives behind a crime that has shocked the state, where more than 400 soldiers have been deployed to reinforce security, are unknown.
However, in a video broadcast on social networks, alleged members of Los Mayos, a criminal faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, claim responsibility for the massacre and affirm that it was commissioned by the state government.
"We do not kill innocent people (...) We only deprive the life and freedom of those who do not submit and respect the agreements with our organization and our allies. What we have just done is just a small coup of authority," said an individual, who identifies himself as a member of the Sinaloa Cartel, an organization designated as terrorist by the United States.
In the video you can see more than ten armed and hooded people. Some of them hold a blanket with the initials 'C.D.S-M-F', in an alleged allusion to the initials of the Sinaloa Cartel and those of “El mayito flaco”, leader of the Los Mayos criminal faction.
The alleged criminal in charge of reading the message also addresses the governor of Zacatecas, David Monreal, whom he asked to "fulfill and respect the agreements that his cabinet has with our organization."
“We want to make it clear to you that if you betray us in the pacts we have, you and all your descendants will end up the same or worse,” the individual threatened the governor, who has not commented on these threats.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the veracity of this recording.
Before the video was published, the head of government of Zacatecas guaranteed that the perpetrators of the massacre “will pay” and that “there will be justice, not impunity.”
Due to its geographical position, Zacatecas is a strategic point for the Mexican cartels that control that state by area.
