The future of the electric FIAT 500 is already defined. Stellantis decided to draw up a multi-year strategy with which it hopes to return prominence to one of the most representative models of the Italian brand, just when competition in the urban electric car segment becomes increasingly intense.

The roadmap includes two key moments. The first will arrive in 2027 with a major technical update for the current model. The second will be in 2030, when a completely new generation will debut that will seek to respond to market demands and stand up to the growing supply from Asian manufacturers.

The bet is not only about improving the vehicle. It also seeks to reinforce the industrial activity of the Mirafiori plant in Turin, where both the FIAT 500 and several strategic components for the electrification of Stellantis will continue to be manufactured.

Batteries will be protagonists from 2027

The first big step will be to incorporate a new battery pack developed and manufactured at Mirafiori. With this update, Stellantis aims to increase the autonomy of the FIAT 500e and, at the same time, reduce manufacturing costs.

That last point is decisive. The European market is receiving more and more low-cost electric models, especially from Chinese manufacturers, forcing traditional brands to offer more competitive products.

A good part of this strategy involves reducing the final price of the vehicle, which must compete with alternatives close to $29,000.

A new generation will arrive in 2030

The real change will come three years later. FIAT is already working on a completely new 500, developed on a state-of-the-art electric platform and accompanied by a more advanced electronic architecture.

In addition to offering more efficient batteries, the manufacturer plans to expand the range with new body variants and different configurations. The intention is to attract more buyers and regain ground both in Europe and in other international markets.

Production will continue at Mirafiori, a plant that will also play an important role in the manufacturing of batteries and electrified eDCT transmissions, in addition to other projects related to the circular economy.

The strategy combines electric and hybrid models

While this new generation arrives, FIAT will maintain an offer made up of the current 500e and the FIAT 500 Hybrid. The idea is to respond to different customer profiles and sustain the production rate while the electricity market continues to evolve.

The company believes that this combination will allow it to better adapt to a demand that continues to grow, although it is still doing so at a lower rate than expected a few years ago.

The challenge will be to recover space against new rivals

The coming years will bring much stronger competition in the urban electric car segment. Models such as the Volkswagen ID.1, the Renault Twingo E-Tech and new low-cost electric vehicles developed by Chinese manufacturers will increase pressure on traditional brands.

With improvements planned for 2027 and a comprehensive renovation scheduled for 2030, Stellantis is confident that the FIAT 500 will once again become one of the references in the category.

The bet combines innovation, cost reduction and a technological update that will be key to keeping one of the most iconic models in the automotive industry in force.
