Trainer Robert Garcia stated that he would not like to see a possible fight between Terence Crawford and David Benavidez for the undisputed super middleweight championship and explained his reasons.
In comments on the ProBox TV channel, Garcia indicated that Benavidez is taller and more powerful than Crawford, so he will be at a total disadvantage.
“The one I don’t want to see, I wouldn’t like to see, is Benavidez against Crawford. There’s a huge difference in physique, in body, in power. I wouldn’t like to see it. I don’t think Crawford will do it. If he does it, it’s because they’re offering him $100 million, $150 million, he’ll do it for the money. But I wouldn’t like to see that fight,” he said.
“Canelo is also gaining weight, (Crawford) is even a little taller, in the reach, Crawford had a 5-inch advantage, so those are small advantages. With Benavidez, I don’t see any of those advantages for Crawford. Benavidez is very strong, very big, very powerful for Crawford to face,” he added.
Let’s remember that after Terence Crawford’s historic victory over Canelo Alvarez—which crowned him undisputed champion at 168 pounds— Turki Alalshikh asked if David Benavidez could drop down to super middleweight, hinting at a possible fight with Bud. Shortly after, Crawford's trainer, Bian 'BoMac' McIntyre, stated that they are not interested in facing Benavidez. It is unknown what the American's next step will be at this time, but he did make it clear that he will continue competing at 168 pounds. Instead, the Mexican Monster will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) 175-pound title against Anthony Yarde on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and could then face Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol. But Jose Benavidez Sr. expressed that they are open to a fight with the American. Terence Crawford, 37, became the undisputed champion of three different divisions by defeating the Mexican, making boxing history. The American remains undefeated and now has 42 wins, 31 of them by knockouts.
For his part,David Benavidez, 29, won the WBA regular 175-pound belt from David Morrell after defeating him on the judges' scorecards and became the WBC champion after Dmitry Bivol resigned. The Mexican Monster has a record of 30 wins, 24 of them by knockout, and no losses in his professional career.
