Sergio Bueno returns to Liga MX to manage Mazatlan FC
After a nine-year absence from Liga MX, Sergio Bueno is back in the top flight to take the reins of the Canoneros de Mazatlan FC
As part of the transformation Mazatlan FC is undergoing to become Atlante starting with the Apertura 2026 tournament, the Canoneros' management decided to hire former Atlante manager Sergio Bueno who thus returns to Liga MX.
Well, with extensive experience in the top flight, including stints with Santos Laguna, Jaguares de Chiapas, Atlas, Atlante, Morelia, Veracruz, San Luis, Queretaro, and Cruz Azul, among other teams, he returns to the First Division with a team managed by the same people who run Atlante, and which will be known as Mazatlan at least until June.
Sergio Bueno has played 306 Liga MX matches between Invierno 2001 and Clausura 2017: 105 with Chiapas, 67 with Atlas, 32 with Santos Laguna, 25 with Celaya, 17 with Puebla, 15 with Queretaro, 13 with Necaxa, 10 with Cruz Azul, 9 with Atlante, 9 with San Luis, and 4 with Morelia.
The official announcement was made by Mazatlan FC, who welcomed the experienced coach, who will take over Mazatlan announced the team's new manager after a poor start to the Clausura 2026 tournament. Bueno arrives in Mazatlan accompanied by his usual assistant Rene Isidoro Garcia and Alberto Pedraza, with a very young squad that has seen its main players leave, leaving only Mauro Lainez, Jordan Sierra, Said Godinez, and Facundo Aldama.Mazatlan will become Atlante starting next July after a 12-year absence from the First Division, while the new Mazatlan coach only has one title to his name, in the now-defunct Primera A, in the 2008 Clausura tournament with Leon.
