The marriage of convenience and commercial support that the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and FIFA have historically sworn to each other added a new chapter. Without any surprises involved, the Mexican organization once again folded its hands to express unconditional support for the current boss of world football, Gianni Infantino.
The Nations League and local tournaments took a backseat due to the uncertainty that hit the union in the last ten days. The culprit? The controversial “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project, an initiative with which Infantino intended to open wide the doors of international tournaments to private investment.
The financial bomb caused absolute rejection in the global football ecosystem. The Swiss had no choice but to apply the handbrake and reverse its intentions to privatize an entity that, throughout history, had boasted tooth and nail of its autonomy. For many, the proposal threatened to devour that institutional mystique in exchange for big bills.
Therefore, this Thursday it was not strange to see the FMF come to the media rescue of the manager. The Swiss received the Aztec accolade just after launching his new assignment: to regain the trust of his affiliates under the promise of maintaining total governance within the game.
The official position of the FMF was announced through a statement that radically contrasted with the hesitant silence they had maintained in recent days. And the fact is that, when the football family wanted to eat Infantino alive and without salt for a project that promised luxuries but reduced political weight, in the Toluca bunker they preferred to watch the bulls from the sidelines before deciding which way to lean.
“The FMF supports the leadership of President Infantino to continue promoting the development of football through institutional strengthening,” reads the official document, revealing its eternal position of bowing to the commercial and long-pants decisions dictated from Zurich.
With this, the FMF made clear its alignment with the highest international authority, endorsing a commitment to always act under the line of the traditional governing bodies. At the same time, they shared Infantino's vision and echoed the invitation for the 211 member associations to continue marching at the same pace.
