Sergio Canales leaves Mexican football and signs for two years with Racing Santander
The Spanish midfielder returns to the club of his training after his time in Mexican soccer with Rayados de Monterrey and an extensive career in Europe.
Racing de Santander made official the signing of Sergio Canales, who will sign a contract until June 30, 2028 and becomes the first reinforcement of the Cantabrian club on its return to the First Division.
The midfielder returns to the team where he formed after a long career in European soccer and a recent stage in Liga MX with Rayados de Monterrey, where he played for three seasons.
Sergio Canales returns home 16 years later
Trained at the Nando Yosu facilities, Canales returns to his hometown club 16 years after his departure, consolidated as a footballer with international experience and competitive weight.
The midfielder, born in Santander on February 16, 1991, made his debut with Racing's first team in 2008, aged just 17, in a UEFA Cup match against FC Honka.
In his first stage with the green and white team he played 39 games, in which he scored seven goals and gave six assists.
Career at Real Madrid, Valencia, Real Sociedad and Betis
After leaving Racing in 2010, Sergio Canales was signed by Real Madrid, beginning a career in the elite of Spanish football that continued with Valencia CF, Real Sociedad and Real Betis.
With the Andalusian team he experienced one of his most notable stages, including winning the Copa del Rey, gaining experience in the most demanding competitions in Europe.
In total, the midfielder has played more than 384 games in the First Division, in addition to more than 40 games in European tournaments and 48 games in the Copa del Rey.
Stage in Rayados de Monterrey in the MX League
In 2023, Canales made the jump to Mexican soccer to join Rayados de Monterrey, where he played the last three seasons.
In Liga MX, the Spanish midfielder played nearly a hundred games, establishing himself as one of the important pieces of the Monterrey club's sporting project during his stay in Mexico.
International experience with the Spanish national team
At the international level, Sergio Canales has been international with the Spanish national team, with whom he played 11 official matches.
His debut with the senior team came on March 23, 2019 against Norway in Mestalla, after having gone through all the lower categories of the national team, from the sub-17 to the sub-20, with which he won European titles and a youth world championship.
A key signing for Racing's return to the First Division
