Google I/O 2026: Google smart glasses are now a reality and are loaded with AI
With built-in cameras and microphones, these glasses turn Gemini into an assistant that perceives the user's environment in real time
Google offered a first look at its long-awaited smart glasses within the framework of Google I/O 2026, confirming its development in conjunction with Samsung and announcing its arrival on the market for the fall of 2026. The announcement marks the official entry of the Android ecosystem into the smart glasses segment, competing directly with the Ray-Ban Meta from Mark Zuckerberg's company.
What are Android XR Audio Glasses?
The new glasses are part of Android XR, the extended reality platform that Google developed together with Samsung and Qualcomm. Unlike virtual reality headsets, these glasses rely on “invisible computing”: without integrated screens, with a lightweight design and all the intelligence concentrated in the Gemini assistant. Google and Samsung officially call them “intelligent eyewear.”
This first model is audio only. All information output is done through speakers integrated into the frames, privately, without the people around you being able to hear the responses. The input, for its part, combines 12 megapixel cameras and microphones that allow Gemini to “see” and “hear” the same as the user in real time.
Design: Gentle Monster and Warby Parker
Far from the futuristic style of other XR devices, Google opted for design as the main Trojan horse. To this end, it announced two collections in collaboration with renowned brands in the optical world:
Only two designs from each collection were revealed at the event, as a preview of a broader line that will be presented soon.
The entire experience of the glasses revolves around Google's AI assistant. To activate it, simply touch the side of the mount or say “Hey Google.” These are the main confirmed functions:
Compatibility and availability
One of the biggest surprises of the announcement was iPhone compatibility. Unlike other devices in the Google ecosystem, these glasses can be connected to both Android phones and iOS devices, considerably expanding their potential market.
In terms of availability, the launch is confirmed for autumn 2026, although Google and Samsung have not yet revealed details on price, battery life or the final weight of the frames. What is clear is that the hardware was developed by Qualcomm.
How much Google smart glasses could cost
Audio glasses are just the first step. Google confirmed that it is working on a second version with an integrated screen that will display visual information directly in the user's field of vision. According to previous leaks, this model with HUD (heads-up display) could arrive in 2027 and its price would be around $900.
For now, the first audio models are outlined with an estimated price of between $379 and $499, positioning themselves directly against Meta's range of smart glasses. However, Google has not yet given official figures on the launch cost.
