A British man was accused of drugging and repeatedly raping his ex-wife over a period of 13 years, UK authorities reported. Five other men were also charged with sex offenses against the same woman.
Philip Young, who lived in Swindon but now lives in Enfield, was charged with 56 sex offenses, including multiple counts of rape and administering a substance with the intent to “stun” Joanne Young, 48, between 2010 and 2023, Crown Prosecution and Wiltshire Police said in a joint statement.
While British law automatically protects the identity of sex crime victims, Joanne Young has voluntarily waived this right.
“She has requested to be named in this press release and is supported by specially trained officers and partner agencies,” the agencies said in their statement.
Philip Young, who remains in custody, was also charged with voyeurism, possession of indecent images of minors, and possession of extreme images, BBC News reported.
The other five men charged with sex offenses The men accused of sexual assault against Joanne Young have been released on bail, police said. Authorities identified the accused as Norman Macksoni, 47, who has been charged with one count of rape and possession of extreme images; Dean Hamilton, also 47, who faces one count of rape and sexual assault with penetration and two counts of sexual contact; Conner Sanderson Doyle, 31, charged with sexual assault with penetration and sexual contact; Richard Wilkins, 61, who faces one count of rape and sexual contact; and Mohammed Hassan, 37, charged with sexual contact. Last year in France, Gisele Pelicot's ex-husband and dozens of other men were convicted of sexually assaulting her between 2011 and 2020. In a landmark verdict that drew international attention,Dominique Pelicot—who admitted to drugging and raping Gisele repeatedly for nearly a decade and inviting dozens of other men to assault her—was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while the sentences for most of the other defendants ranged from three to 15 years.
