Airbnb wants to be more than an accommodation app at the 2026 World Cup
The company adds services and functions with artificial intelligence to facilitate everything from arrival to travel planning during the World Cup
Airbnb wants the 2026 FIFA World Cup to start well before the first whistle. The platform has presented a series of new services, experiences and tools with artificial intelligence designed to make every step of the trip easier, from arriving in the city to returning home, with a clear commitment to becoming a kind of trip control center.
Airbnb gets into the whole journey
The big news is that Airbnb no longer wants to be just a place to sleep. The company is adding services designed to solve those small annoyances that always appear when one travels, just in a season in which millions of people will move around for the World Cup. The idea is quite clear: that the user can book accommodation, organize transfers, sort out luggage, make purchases and even live special experiences without leaving the same app. Airbnb wants everything to happen in one place.
Among the new services is the delivery of supermarkets to the accommodation, a function that will allow you to order purchases before arriving or during your stay. In some cities, hosts will even be able to receive the order and leave the home stocked before check-in. For guests who book accommodations on Airbnb, there will be free delivery and a $10 discount on orders of $50 or more, although the offer applies only in select cities in the United States and for a limited time, until May 31, 2026.
Airport transfers are also added. Airbnb will integrate private vehicle reservations to and from accommodation thanks to Welcome Pickups, with flight tracking and a driver waiting curbside upon arrival. In this case, guests will get a 20% discount on each trip. The service is already available in more than 160 cities around the world, so this is not a small pilot but a pretty serious expansion.
Another practical move is the luggage storage. With the alliance with Bounce, travelers will be able to leave suitcases before check-in or after check-out and check nearby locations in the app. Airbnb promises access to more than 15,000 storage locations in 175 cities, plus a 15% discount for guests. On a game-to-game trip, that kind of detail can make a huge difference.
Experiences that are only lived in the World Cup
Where Airbnb brings the most excitement is in the experiences directly linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The platform will offer unique activities in six host cities, designed so that the trip is not limited to the stadium. There will be intimate meetings with football figures, special sessions and activities linked to the tournament environment, all reserved from the platform itself.
Among the most striking examples is a gathering to watch the game between the United States and Australia in Los Angeles with World Cup champions Abby Wambach and Julie Foudy. There will also be experiences such as training with Javier Mascherano, a proposal that mixes sport, closeness and access to very recognizable names for football fans. That's the kind of content that can help Airbnb gain prominence at a huge sporting event.
Beyond the World Cup, the company is expanding its Experience catalog with thousands of new options organized by local experts. There are categories focused on emblematic sites, gastronomic culture and events. Airbnb already offers more than 3,000 experiences near landmarks and more than 2,500 dining experiences, with special collaborations ranging from dinners with renowned chefs to culinary activities in iconic markets. The bet is obvious: not only transport the traveler, but turn the stay into something more memorable.
Boutique hotels and new features with AI
The other big news is that Airbnb adds thousands of boutique and independent hotels. The platform already shows hotels in 20 main destinations such as New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome and Singapore, and will continue to add more cities during the year. The selection is made by location, design and hospitality, not including large chains. In practice, Airbnb is approaching a more hybrid offer, where houses, apartments and hotels coexist with the same booking logic.
There are also financial incentives. If a user finds a lower price for the same hotel on another app or website, Airbnb offers to match the difference with credit to spend within the platform. Plus, when you book a featured hotel, you can earn up to 15% credit toward a future Airbnb stay. It is a smart move to retain the traveler within the ecosystem.
In parallel, the app receives several functions powered by artificial intelligence. The new system synthesizes millions of reviews to show the most important things about each accommodation without forcing the user to read everything. It also incorporates AI-generated comparisons to see which option best fits the trip, with summaries on location, amenities and family-friendliness. For group trips, Airbnb adds a shared itinerary with map, reservations, nearby restaurants, and transfer times. The app becomes more useful, more visual and much less chaotic.
Key pricing and discounts
The new services arrive with specific discounts that help understand Airbnb's commercial strategy. Grocery delivery includes free delivery and $10 off purchases of $50 or more. Airport transfers have a 20% discount per trip. The luggage storage offers 15% discount. And car rentals, which will be integrated into the app later, will give a 20% credit on Airbnb the first time you reserve one. For hotels, the credit can be up to 15% on eligible reservations and price matching can return credit if a lower rate appears elsewhere.
A clear shift in strategy
The most interesting thing about all this is that Airbnb no longer presents itself as just a hosting platform. The company is promoting a broader travel experience, where accommodation, mobility, gastronomy, activities and technical support are mixed in the same app. With the 2026 World Cup as a big showcase, Airbnb is using the event to show much greater ambition. It wants to be the app that accompanies you throughout the trip, not just during the reservation.
That vision fits very well with a market where travelers seek comfort, speed and more personalized experiences. And if execution continues, Airbnb can turn this World Cup into the best example of its definitive leap from digital host to comprehensive travel platform.
